During the last few months I have been working hard together with MFM Media to build a new site dedicated to the European Jazz scene called:

JAZZ IN EUROPE

Jazz In Europe is a new English language blog dedicated to all things jazz in Europe. Why English? The answer to this question is rather simple; our goal is to spread the word about all the great jazz talent and happenings in the European jazz scene to the broadest audience that we can reach. Our focus is truly world wide. We believe the best way to achieve this is to communicate to our readers in English.

We will feature concert and CD reviews, publish interviews with European and international jazz musicians performing in Europe, Spotlight top European venues and festivals and comment on all the latest news regarding Jazz in Europe. In time we will be adding extra features to the site including among others a Geo-targeted concert diary, video interviews and much more.

With this in mind I will be discontinuing this blog effective 31 March 2013

You can find the new site at:

www.jazzineurope.com

Please come and check us out

Thanks to all my readers who have followed me and I hope to see you all on Jazz In Europe.
After successful performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and her recent Portuguese tour, Jazz vocalist Maria Mendes will present her debut CD “Along the road” (Dot Time Records – DT9013) at the North Sea Jazz Club in Amsterdam on the 13th of October 2012.

Maria Mendes is one the current rising stars on the jazz scene. In 2011 Maria signed a worldwide recording contract with the New York based jazz label, Dot Time Records. With the release of her debut CD “Along the road” Maria has drawn the attention of both the jazz media and public. The recent Portuguese concerts and the CD presentation in the North Sea Jazz Club mark the start of a concert tour in 2012 – 13 that will see Maria performing throughout Europe, the USA and South America.

Maria Mendes is an undeniable talented jazz singer with incredible inventive and unique vocal abilities. Maria is known for her crystal clear voice, creative and exciting phrasing and vocal virtuosity. All these qualities make her singing standing out elegance, charm and vivid charisma. Her culturally rich background has influenced her style with elements of the Bossa Nova’s gentle groove, the melancholy of the Portuguese Fado and the American jazz swing of the early 50s. .

Carrying these natural abilities with her on stage, Maria’s performances have provided her with international acclaim, significant awards and rave reviews while at the same time building her a loyal international following. During the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2010 Quincy Jones stated “I see a promising and shining future for this young talented singer”. With the release of “Along the road” we can see that Mr. Jones prediction was right on the money.

Concert Details:
Title: Maria Mendes – CD Presentation
Date: Saturday 13th October 2012
Time: 9:00 pm
Venue: North Sea Jazz Club | Pazzanistraat 1 | 1014 DB AMSTERDAM
Tickets: Available from €14.00 | available online at www.northseajazzclub.com
Web: www.northseajazzclub.com
During the last edition of the Jazz Ahead club night in
Bremen (Germany) I had the pleasure of seeing Greg Diamond, a young NYC based guitar
player. This was for me one of the highlights of Jazz Ahead 2011 and I left the
venue sure that we will be hearing a great deal about this talented guitarist
in the years to come. Surprisingly enough Greg’s second CD “Conduit” landed on
my desk for review a few weeks ago. The
CD features a number of heavy hitting players from the current NYC scene
including Seamus Blake on tenor sax, Henry Cole on drums and Mike Eckroth on
piano, all in all a very impressive lineup.

The CD features 8 of Greg’s compositions and shows Greg
as not only a wonderful player but a very talented composer as well. Yvette
opens the CD with a unison melody played by guitar and tenor leading into a strong
solo’s from Seamus Blake and Greg. The contemplative “Inertia” follows, Mike
Eckroth on piano sets the tone for a beautiful melody again played in unison by
Greg and Alto saxophonist Brian Hogans. The track gradually develops into a
slow montuno grove and sets the stage for an impressive solo’s from both Greg
and Brian Hogans.

El Martillo is a 7/4 Latin jazz romp and displays this
rhythm section at its best. In contrast “El
Pozo” provides a vehicle for Greg to demonstrate his affinity with Latin jazz,
his playing on this track displays the utmost taste. Bassist Edward Perez shows
great skill in “Turbulence” with a short but well crafted solo reminiscent of
Scott LaFaro. My personal favorite is the beautiful ballad “Song for Jerry (Mi
Viejo). This well crafted composition is full of surprises and features an
impressive solo from Tenor player Seamus Blake.

Greg Diamond I consider to be one of the most exciting
guitarists that I have heard in years. Although well established in his native
New York City outside of the big apple he is largely unknown. With this release
I am sure he will gain the attention of the international jazz world that he

Recorded in two of Europe's leading jazz venues (Sunset in Paris and the Altes Phandhaus in Cologne) the CD features a combination of original material together with a number of standards.

First cab off the rank is the Brubeck standard In “Your Own Sweet Way”. Dave Liebman opens this straight ahead swinger with a beautiful rendition of the melody leading to a typical Liebman style solo full of harmonic and rhythmic tension. Title track “Lemuria”, composed by pianist Michael Arbenz settles straight into a solid rock groove providing a strong foundation for soloists Liebman and Michael Arbenz to explore the edges of tonality.

The ballad, “I Loves You Porgy”, is a Vein standard and also appears on their first release on Unit records “Porgy & Bess” (UTR 4284). The track opens with a beautiful sax and piano duet, Michael Arbenz continues with a tasteful solo including some very well placed Gershwin style licks.

Vein original “Evolution” provides room for bassist Thomas Lähns to show his virtuosity prior to opening up into a free style improvisation leading to a superb drum solo by Florian Arbenz. Next up is Dave Liebmans composition “Climbing”. This track that provides the listener with a soundscape reminiscent of the ECM releases of the early 80’s. While originally written for Bobo Stenson this track appears for the first time on this CD.

The final track on the CD is an arrangement of the Gershwin standard summertime. On this track Lähns bass intro gives way to a complex funk grove, setting the stage for Liebman's sparse but rhythmically complex solo.

Once again the brothers Michael and Florian Arbenz (piano, drums) together with bassist Thomas Lähns have delivered a great set that highlights an almost empathic interplay between these talented musicians. Dave Liebman's inspiring playing demonstrates a level of interaction that can only be expected from a group of musicians creating great jazz from a position of mutual respect. Highly recommended.
Kevin Ellington Mingus was 3 years old when his grandfather, jazz legend, Charles Mingus passed away. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1976, Kevin grew up distanced from the creative legacy of his grandfather. Kevin started his musical journey at age 10 on guitar switching to double bass a year later, in fact it was not until his early youth that he discovered his grandfather’s passion for the bass.

Kevin attended the University of California, Berkeley furthering his studies in music. While Kevin had a strong upbringing in jazz , it was during his time at UC Berkeley that he became interested in other genres leading to further studies in Argentina during the late 1990s at the Manuel de Falla Music Conservatory where he studied tango, bandoneon and composition with Nestor Marconi.

Also while at Berkeley Kevin made his first steps into the world of film. Fascinated by the disconnect with reality, Kevin started to document on film the happenings on campus with a camera given to him by his Aunt. Kevin’s passion for film continued after moving to Berlin in 2002 where he ventured into a number of cross media projects combining music with theatre and new media and gaining experience in filming and producing documentaries. Also during this period Kevin worked intensively with Croatian filmmaker Sasa Oreskovic in Soundless Fall of the Gravitation and Rio Pekos.

Kevin’s current project is a feature length documentary titled “Mingus on Mingus” a documentary of a grandson discovering the truths behind the legend of the grandfather he never knew. There has been so much written about Charles Mingus and many of these stories have been rather exaggerated during the years. In speaking with Kevin recently he stated “with this film I hope to discover the real Charles Mingus, the man behind the legend”.

The documentary will include many interviews with musicians that knew and worked with Charles including among others Sonny Rollins, Joni Mitchell, Ornette Coleman and Charles McPherson. When asked about their reaction to the project, Kevin stated that everyone is extremely positive about the project and believes that the fact that the documentary is being made by a member of the Mingus family certainly impacted on their reaction. Kevin believes that there is a sense of urgency in the production of the project, with the passing of each year that generation is disappearing; we need to document this as soon as possible.

To this end Kevin’s production company “Orange then blue”(named after the famous composition by Charles) has launched a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter.com to assist in the financing of the project.
The St. Regis Doha today confirmed that it will be the first St. Regis hotel in the world – and the first venue outside of America to host a Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) jazz club, as part of the unprecedented global partnership between St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and JALC.

Throughout the Jazz Age, The St. Regis Rooftop Ballroom in the landmark hotel in New York City played host to some of the finest jazz musicians in history. The rich musical legacy is now coming to Qatar thanks to the new agreement, which will bring a range of cultural and educational opportunities to the people of Qatar.

Jazz at Lincoln Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and growing audiences for jazz. Through this partnership, jazz programming will be developed at The St. Regis Doha, led by Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, providing both the novice and aficionado the opportunity to experience world-class jazz.

Tareq Derbas, General Manager, The St. Regis Doha, said: “We are delighted to welcome Jazz at Lincoln Center to its new home at The St. Regis Doha. We have promised our customers unmatched luxury and a rich range of entertainment options, and we believe that our signature venue, Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha, will delight and inspire our guests. I would like to thank our owner and the team responsible for beginning this exciting new era for jazz in the Middle East.”

The opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha and The St. Regis Doha further solidifies Qatar as an emerging centre of culture, commerce and leisure in the Middle East. The hotel, scheduled to open early next year, promises to bring the legendary St. Regis luxury to this thriving commercial and business region.

Lisa Schiff, Chairman of JALC stated “We are thrilled with the opportunity to work with St. Regis to reach new audiences and to support our mission of growing and inspiring audiences for jazz around the globe,”. The agreement is part of a wider global partnership, which will see the two New York icons together to jointly-conceptualise and create a series of jazz clubs around the world in multiple new St. Regis hotels.
Well how could I say no. As a bass player Charles Mingus was and still is a great inspiration to me and I believe that this film will be a great addition to his legacy. In addition the film will be directed by Kevin Ellington Mingus (grandson of Charles Mingus) bringing a true personal perspective to the production.

By pledging an amount in return for a package of incentives the public can become not only consumers but stakeholders in a project. The Mingus on Mingus project offers a great range of Incentives ranging from copies of the DVD to invitations to the premiere to name just a few. Funds received will go into the production of the documentary for conducting interviews, travel and accommodation, equipment rental, camera operator as well as archival research fees and editing costs for a promotional trailer. If we exceed our goal, then proceeds will go toward the post-production budget including editing, mastering and licensing.
The regulars had already taken up position in the seats at the back of the club. Most of the seats at the front were still empty except for a few of those fans more interested in who else was there (you can pick them a mile away by the way the keep looking over their shoulder or inspecting the state of the wiring hanging from the ceiling. I usually try to sit toward the back however this evening I had a guest with me that wanted to sit up front. Ok then, there are still seats up front behind the band leader, “we should be able to hear everything well here”.

Well indeed, BANG!!, I can’t remember all that much from the first eight bars, I felt like I had been hit with a ton of bricks. After regaining my composure I realized that the Dual City Concert Band can a great deal more than just playing extremely loud. The band combines an extremely compact sound with a high level of technique. At no point in time did I have the feeling that the players had any difficulty at all negotiating the challenging charts in front of them. These musicians can play it all and play it all last Friday they did. Taste is a personal thing and personally I would have preferred to have heard more bass and piano in the balance particularly in the tutti passages. This is often a problem when the piano and bass are not amplified and in addition the acoustics of the De Tor don’t help a great deal in this aspect.

Don Braden was announced as a New York tenor player as if this was a stamp of quality. As far as I am concerned this is rubbish, not everything that comes out of New York is good, however this is not the case with Don Braden. After the thundering opening from the big band, Braden in consultation with band leader Rini Swinkels decided to begin with Dave Brubeck’s “In Your Own Sweet Way” performed with the bands rhythm section and as he stated in his introduction, in the style of Miles Davis. Most impressive was his beautiful tone that in spite of the breathy sound remained strong.

During the up tempo pieces Braden displayed enviable technique particularly in the super quick “Cherokee” navigating at least four tonal centers. This piece was counted in very quickly and slowed down somewhat however was a good opportunity for Braden to display is prowess. Braden showed himself to be a strong but humble showman, respectfully accepting the applause not only for himself but also for the rest of the musicians. Braden also had no problem in stepping out of the spotlight allowing room for the other soloists. A quality we have come to expect from American musicians and appreciated here in the Netherlands. Had he have been any more humble we could have expected to see him helping behind the bar in the break.

Hans Kerkhoff

The CD is dedicated to the Plaza Niña in Huelva, a small town in southern Spain not far from Sevilla and Villoslada’s birth place. In the press release Villoslada states “these ideas are inspired by the melodramatic atmosphere created by the great cantaor Paco Toronjo, the most representative fandango cantaor from Alonso (Huelva).”

The CD opens with the title track and begins with a tasteful cadenza by Villoslada leading seamlessly to the simple melody presented as a quasi fandango rhythm. This stylish introduction immediately sets the atmosphere for the rest of the CD. Particularly impressive on this track is the short but effective bass solo by Antonio Corrales. The haunting “Después de Tocar” follows introducing singer Raúl Gálvez. Gálvez shows a passion and lyricism rarely heard in the genre, his vocal contribution on the album is one of the many highpoints contained on this CD.

My favorite track on this CD is without a doubt the beautiful ballad “74 Pesetas de Whisky”. The rhythm section sets the feel providing room for Villoslada’s intimate tone to conger up that late night atmosphere in the well crafted melody. Both Villoslada and Galiardo (piano) play tasteful and melodic solo’s on this piece.

I would appear the every city, town and village has at least one big band either amateur, semi-pro or professional. Big Band 89 falls into the amateur category however based on their performance in Borne last Sunday one could have easily thought this not to be the case.

The concert comprised two sets of mainstream big band repertoire drawn largely from the 40’s and 50’s. The concert opend with Neal Hefti’s “Splanky”. I missed the tutti into that was replaced here with a welcome speech. The band picked up the tempo in the second piece Choo Choo Ch Boogie made famous by Louis Jordan and featured a strong trumpet solo from Marco Wind. Vocalists Wilma van Diepen and Henk Bleumink provided a well balanced vocal set including a duet arrangement of “I thought about you”. The highlight of this set was Quincy Jones beautiful ballad “Quintessence” featuring alto player Willy van Diepen. Van Diepen displayed great sensitivity and inventiveness in this piece and his sound reminded me of the Phil Woods original.

The Second set was opened with an arrangement of “Fever” sung by Wilma van Diepen (are they family?). In this piece band displayed a wide range of dynamics providing a strong accompaniment for the vocals. The vocal block was followed by a strong rendition of “Sing Sing Sing” made famous by Benny Goodman and featured drummer Jan ter Maat in a solo the Gene Krupa would be proud of. Vocalist Henk Bleumink provided a rendition of Mack the Knife switching between English and German lyrics. Personally I would have preferred a pure English rendition however judging by the applause, the public would probably not agree with me on this point. The show closed with a great rendition of the classic “In the mood” leaving the packed house screaming for more.

Big Band 89 performed with passion and energy throughout this concert and displayed a true affinity with the style. I do have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect Sunday not having heard this band before, however any preconceived doubts I may have had were quickly dispelled. Judging by the sold out hall, I am now convinced that the great American big band tradition is alive and well and living in the Netherlands. I hope to hear more from this band in the future.

Johan van Deeg

For this CD the trio has drawn largely on the classical repertoire for their inspiration. My first opinion prior to hearing the CD was, here we go again, another crossover CD however after hearing the first few tracks this preconceived opinion was completely dispelled. The fact is you need to listen extremely closely to pick the piece where the changes originate from. Luckily Read gives this away in the liner notes.

The opening track’s title ”J.S.B.” eludes to Johan Sebastian Bach and is based on the harmony from the aria “Erbarme dich” from Bach’s St Mathew Passion. The track opens with an 8 bar pedal point leading to the new melody composed by pianist Hans Kwakkernaat over Bach’s chord changes. The solos are tasteful but as far as I am concerned a little on the short side. “Just before dawn” is based on the harmony of Samuel Barbers famous Adagio for strings and is beautiful piece presented here as a bossa nova. Kwakkernaat opens the solos on this track with a short but well formed solo leading to a beautifully melodic bass solo from band leader Andrew Read.

My favorite track on this CD is without a doubt the up tempo swinger W.A.M. This track opens with a unison melody played by the piano and bass weaving through the complex harmony of Beethoven’s piano sonata Op2 no3. Kwakkernaat shows his substantial chops in an impressive solo reminding me of Kenny Baron. The haunting ballad “Lara” is beautiful piece featuring a rather simple melody played by both bass and piano and is great example of less is more.

The CD also contains some standards including a solo piano rendition on Monk’s “Round Midnight”. Kwakkernaat is brilliant in this rendition of Monk’s classic stretching the harmonic possibilities of the changes to their outermost edges while still retaining the essence of the original. One of the highlights of this CD is the closing track, John Scofield’s “Grey and visceral”, with solid solos from both Kwakkernaat and Read while drummer Erik Poorterman holds down the steady 12/8 feel.

The only down point I can find with this CD is that the recording sounds a little indirect. Personally I would have preferred the sound to have been more direct although this is always a matter of personal opinion. I really like this CD and if asked if I it’s worth buying, the answer would be simple, In a New York minute.

Johan van Deeg
